<image:caption>Artemis Shoppe Artemis was the second place (after the pottery studio store) to accept my work at the beginning of my journey. I’ll always be grateful to Elizabeth, the owner, for her support in those early days as I was still building my skills and direction. Artemis is a homeware shop featuring ethical, sustainable brands and artwork from independent artists in the heart of Topanga Canyon. Their ceramics collection is quite large, ranging from plates and cups to vases and wall pieces. They also offer interior design services and a small gallery space, with a focus on supporting women makers. When I recommend Artemis to friends, I always say - make it a full Topanga day! Start with a scenic hike (Red Rock Canyon Park is a favorite). Then explore the shops at Pine Tree Circle, including Artemis and other small stores with handmade goods, art, pottery, jewelry, and clothing. Stop for lunch at The Living Cafe for fresh salads, tacos, pastries, and coffee. End the day at Topanga Beach to catch a breathtaking sunset. It’s truly a special corner of LA.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I love exploring textures in my ceramic work, both for their visual impact and the tactile experience it creates. Adding texture can transform a simple piece into something deeply expressive and unique. There are countless ways to create textured ceramics surfaces and each approach adds its own character and depth to the finished piece.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This type of clay, often referred to as sculpture clay, is not only beautiful but also practical. It’s easy to work with for larger pieces because it holds its structure well, even during the construction of complex forms. The rough surface it provides can be a design feature on its own, often requiring little to no further alteration. I enjoy the rustic and organic quality it brings to my work. For this vase I used sculptural clay called “Black Mountain“ which has a lot of grog and a beautiful roughened surface.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Carving allows for incredible versatility, whether you’re creating fine details or bold, dramatic patterns. It also opens up opportunities to play with light and shadow, as carved textures catch light differently depending on their depth and angle. (Leather-hard refers to a stage in the drying process of clay when it is partially dry and firm but still contains enough moisture to work with. It feels cool to the touch, much like leather—hence the name.)</image:caption>

<image:caption>I enjoy combining lava glaze with matte finishes like the vases on the photo, splattering it in specific areas to create a natural, organic effect. The contrast between the rough, tactile lava and the smooth, matte glaze creates visual and textural interest, giving the piece an added layer of depth and complexity. For those experimenting with textured glazes, it’s worth noting that firing temperature, glaze thickness, and clay body can all affect the final result. Testing and refining are essential to discovering what works best for your vision.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Journal - Exploring texture techniques in ceramics</image:title>
<image:caption>This discovery sparked my curiosity about wild clay from different regions, as their mineral compositions vary. Some types act almost like a glaze, melting under high heat, while others remain stable and add intriguing textures. I look forward to further experiments, hoping to uncover wild clays that offer consistent and unique results. The unpredictability of this process adds a sense of adventure to my work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At high temperatures the rocks melted, creating intricate, organic patterns that felt almost otherworldly. The result was a vase with a surface that invites exploration. Every melted detail telling a story of natural transformation. Rocks from different locations may yield entirely different results, making this method a fascinating area for further experiments.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Journal - Exploring texture techniques in ceramics</image:title>
<image:caption>Slip can also be used for more dramatic effects, such as trailing, stamping, or even creating raised patterns. Mixing slip with oxides or stains adds color to the texture, further expanding the possibilities. In addition to that, applying multiple layers of different materials, such as slip or glaze, to create depth and contrast is also an interesting way to achieve textured surfaces. For the vase on the photo I used slip from the same clay as the vase itself. It added delicate texture without changing the color of the whole piece.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Textures in ceramics are as limitless as the imagination. Each technique offers new ways to explore the relationship between form and surface, inviting both artist and viewer to engage with the piece on multiple levels. Whether through groggy clay, carved lines, or experimental materials like rocks and wild clay, textures bring ceramics to life. They create an intimate dialogue between the maker, the object, and the person who holds it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is my interview for the 5th edition of “The Art Bridge“ magazine published on October 28th, 2024. Enjoy! Anna Shipulina is a talented ceramic artist whose work intricately weaves together themes of female identity, the beauty of nature, and the tactile experience of art. Through her exploration of fluid movement, soft lines, and organic shapes, Anna seeks to evoke a sense of calmness and harmony in her observers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Women in art: Anna Shipulina’s exploration of womanhood and natural forms through ceramic art</image:title>
<image:caption>Your work often reflects the journey of the female body and its evolution over time. Does your personal experience influence the way you portray this transformative process in your ceramics? In many ways, yes. Over the years, my relationship with my body has evolved significantly. Only now, in my forties, have I reached a level of self-acceptance and appreciation for what my body does for me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Women in art: Anna Shipulina’s exploration of womanhood and natural forms through ceramic art</image:title>
<image:caption>Your work evokes nature with its fluid movement and organic shapes. How do you see the relationship between nature and the human body, and what inspires your choice of forms? I draw nourishment and inspiration from nature. The organically shaped forms I create directly reflect what I observe outdoors. Everything in nature is fluid - gentle, calm, and beautifully imperfect - just like the human body. I strive to celebrate the uniqueness of women’s bodies. Each woman is special in her way, and we should not force ourselves to fit into someone else’s standards.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Women in art: Anna Shipulina’s exploration of womanhood and natural forms through ceramic art</image:title>
<image:caption>Your work often bears the imprint of your hands, emphasizing the human touch and imperfections. How important is this tactile connection to your overall artistic philosophy? The tactile connection is essential. In today’s market, many products appear handcrafted but are not, and it’s not always easy to tell the difference. I embrace the imperfections that come from my preferred coil-building technique, as these marks serve as reminders of the human touch, bringing authenticity and uniqueness to each piece.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Reflecting on your artistic journey, what has been the most significant project or turning point for you? I stumbled into ceramics unexpectedly and initially saw it as a craft. However, transitioning to hand-building allowed me to create sculptural works. This shift opened up unlimited potential for form and scale and prompted me to explore the narrative of womanhood, which is now a central theme in my work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’m excited to introduce you to my new series of works: hand-built ceramic vases combined with wire. This project has been a long time coming, an idea I’ve been keeping in mind for months. I’ve always envisioned how wire, rocks, and wood might interact with clay in unique and unexpected ways, but I kept the concept on hold, feeling a little intimidated by the unknown.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - New mixed media ceramic vases series: a mix of ceramics and wire</image:title>
<image:caption>All the wire vases in this series are created using the coiling technique, one of the oldest and most traditional pottery methods. There’s a certain meditative rhythm to this process, where I hand-build each piece by layering and shaping coils of clay. It’s a method that demands patience but rewards you with an incredible amount of creative freedom. It’s no wonder ancient cultures embraced it—coiling lets me shape the clay into any form I can imagine.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - New mixed media ceramic vases series: a mix of ceramics and wire</image:title>
<image:caption>The real excitement in this series came when I started experimenting with how wire could interact with different types of clay. There’s something almost magical about the contrast between the soft, malleable nature of clay and the rigid, industrial feel of wire. It’s a delicate balance—figuring out how to make two such different materials complement rather than compete with one another.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - New mixed media ceramic vases series: a mix of ceramics and wire</image:title>
<image:caption>On the other hand, thicker, darker wire pairs perfectly with the rough, unglazed texture of brown stoneware. The earthy tones and rugged surface of the stoneware demanded something equally bold and textured and the wire added just the right amount of strength and edge. The result is a series of contemporary mixed media vases that stand out from my usual body of work. Each vase has its own distinct character and feel, combining the timeless quality of clay with the modern, unexpected twist of wire.</image:caption>

For prices and availability please contact GRAYE directly by following the link to their website here. But this is just the beginning. My mind is buzzing with ideas for future pieces. I plan to experiment with both small and large vases, exploring how wire can continue to influence the form and feeling of each piece. I’m curious to see how far I can push the boundaries between wire and clay, finding new ways to make these two materials converse with each other.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Before discovering ceramics, I was navigating between helping my partner in a family business, being a full-time parent, and a homeschooling mom when my son got older. I moved to the US from Russia in 2011, and since then, life’s been pretty busy, but art? It was never really my thing. Then, in 2020, during the lockdown, when there was nowhere to go, I had a chance to stop my busy life and look inside myself. The questions like – “Am I really happy?”. “Is it the life I wanted?”, started to arise. And the question was NO.</image:caption>

I never knew I could actually make things with my own hands like that. After a couple of months, I was hooked. I decided to become a member of the studio and just kept on learning on my own. It’s been this incredible journey of discovering what I can do and just having fun with it. It’s like I found this new way to speak without words, just through the clay.</image:caption>

I was scared, but I listened and offered my work for sale through my Instagram just 3 months after I touched clay for the first time. Guess what? I sold my first bud vase 15 minutes after I posted it in my stories and then a few more pieces in this first attempt. I was blown away by the support and decided to keep on going.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the fall of 2023, I participated in an online clay residency where I worked on discovering my artistic voice which brought me to my past personal experience of losing myself to false expectations, sacrificing myself to be the perfect wife and mother, physical and emotional burnout. The stories of women, mine, and those around me inspire me the most. During the residency, I started a new series of works – abstract sculptures representing women. Through these sculptures, I want to share the narrative of women’s empowerment to inspire others to listen to their hearts, to stop forcing themselves and trying to fit in.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ceramics can be broadly categorized into earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain, each with its own distinct characteristics and suitable uses. Earthenware is typically more porous and fired at lower temperatures, resulting in a rustic and earthy feel. Stoneware, fired at higher temperatures, is more durable and has a denser texture. Porcelain, known for its fine quality and translucence, is often used for more delicate and refined pieces. Photo from the studio of Janaki Larsen, Vancouver, British Columbia</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - An ultimate guide to incorporating ceramic art into your home - Incorporating ceramic art into your home decor is a wonderful way to add elegance, character, and craftsmanship to your space. By carefully selecting and thoughtfully displaying these pieces, you can create an environment that is both aesthetically pleasing and personally meaningful. Whether you're drawn to the elegance of a uniquely textured vase, the charm of an organically shaped vessel, or the bold statement of a contemporary ceramic sculpture, ceramics offer endless possibilities to enhance your interior. Unique Aesthetics Ceramic pieces often feature organic shapes, rich textures, and a variety of finishes, making them standout additions to any interior. No two handmade ceramics are exactly alike, providing a sense of uniqueness and character to your space. Often, ceramic artists create single-edition works that can’t be replicated, ensuring you get a one-of-a-kind art piece in your home. This is especially true for artists like myself who work with hand-building techniques rather than making ceramics on the pottery wheel. Even if I try, I cannot make two identical pieces, which makes each one even more special.</image:title>

<image:caption>Ceramics can fit into almost any interior design style, from modern and minimalist to rustic and traditional. Ceramic decor objects come in a variety of textures and colors, from earthy rustic surfaces to glossy glazes, and range from muted, nature-inspired tones to bright, vibrant colors. Their adaptability makes them a perfect choice for various rooms and settings. Whether you want to create a serene, understated look or make a bold statement, ceramic art can seamlessly blend into your decor. Connection to Craftsmanship Handmade ceramics reflect the skill and creativity of the artist, bringing a touch of human connection and authenticity to your home. Some artists intentionally leave irregularities, indents, and fingerprints as evidence of the human hands that create each piece.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The way you live influences the way you feel. Think about what you want to feel in your home. Do you desire a sense of calmness, relaxation, and comfort? Or perhaps you want your home to inspire you with its artistry and sophistication? A home should represent its owner rather than be driven by trends. Select pieces that you find visually appealing or have a personal connection to. Something that you are truly attracted to will ultimately stand the test of time. Do Your Research Make sure to look for unique ceramic art and artisanal ceramics when choosing your pieces. There are many works out there that might look handmade but are actually manufactured. More so, the design could be copied from the original ceramic art by an artist. I will talk more about how to find original ceramic art below. <image:caption>Ceramic Centerpiece Use ceramic artwork to create focal points in your rooms. A large ceramic sculpture or an arrangement of vases can draw the eye and anchor the space. Consider Walls for Ceramic Display Adding ceramic wall installations is something new and unconventional. More and more ceramic artists are creating pieces for hanging on the walls. The good news is that the installation can be customized specifically for your wall size. Ceramic wall art is a great way to elevate your space to the next level of sophistication. Use Shelves and Mantels Shelves and mantels are perfect for displaying ceramic pieces. Arrange items at varying heights and group them in odd numbers for a more visually appealing display. Place all of them on one side of the mantel.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Buy from Local Artists Purchasing from local ceramic artists supports their craft and provides you with a unique, one-of-a-kind piece. Explore local galleries, craft fairs, search on social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest, online directories like Erria, and marketplaces like Etsy to find beautiful ceramics. As I mentioned earlier, it can be confusing to identify if the ceramic work you are interested in is manufactured or handcrafted by an actual artist. The best way to identify if you are buying a handmade piece is by reading the “About” section on their website or a marketplace. In most cases, the artist will have their photo and talk about their background, inspiration, and creative process. This not only ensures you are buying a unique handmade ceramic piece made by human hands but also helps to connect with the values of the artist and understand the story behind their work.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Insight into the practice of creating ceramic artwork - the practice</image:title>
<image:caption>There are two ways to work with clay: one is using the pottery wheel, and the second is using only your hands to build and form the shape of a piece, which is called hand-building. I started in pottery by learning to throw clay on the wheel but soon discovered hand-building and fell in love with it. I found it more appealing to create organic shapes rather than more symmetrical ones. Hand-building allows for a more tactile connection to the material, which I prefer. I like to mold the clay with my fingers, to feel its grittiness, cold temperature, and plasticity. It's a slower process than wheel-throwing and more meditative, in my opinion.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Handcrafted ceramics is a slow and deliberate craft where everything is a matter of time. Each piece requires several weeks to be carried out and undergoes multiple stages of altering and caring. As intense as it is, it's also an intriguing and exciting process of turning dirt into the ceramic artwork you see in galleries and on social media. I'm here to walk you through each stage of making handmade pottery. In my practice I start by making pieces in my home studio. My outdoor space under the tree is where I slowly and meticulously create every single piece you see here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Insight into the practice of creating ceramic artwork - Making hand-built pottery requires several hours, sometimes days. Clay has to dry to a certain degree where it's still workable but can hold its shape to add more clay without collapsing. When the piece is done, it has to dry slowly by being covered in plastic. Drying too fast can cause cracks.. Once a piece reaches the appropriate hardness, where I can place it in the container and move safely, it makes its way to a community studio. In the studio, it has to dry completely, then be placed in the kiln and fired.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Insight into the practice of creating ceramic artwork</image:title>
<image:caption>Pottery requires two firings: the first to strengthen it and get it ready for glaze and surface decoration application. The second is to make it durable, food-safe, and ready for use. This involves exposing the pieces to high temperatures of approximately 2381°F or 1305°C. There are quite a few stages in making pottery where things can go wrong. Pieces can crack due to a several reasons, including drying unevenly or too fast. They sometimes explode in the kiln, luckily for me I have never experienced that. Then, going into the second firing, there are multiple things that ceramicists need to watch out for. Glazes, in particular, are very tricky and require a lot of experience to apply.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Insight into the practice of creating ceramic artwork - You will be surprised but the same glaze will look completely different on different clay bodies. It can range from light blue on porcelain to dark brown on black clay. You can see the example in the photo on the right. “Chun“ glaze differs pretty dramatically in color on different clay. You have no idea how many such surprises I got in 4 years of making handcrafted ceramics. Sometimes those surprises are good; sometimes, it's a disaster, but it's always a learning experience. Glazes also tend to run if applied too thick, which will result in the pieces being glued to the kiln shelf without any chance to get it out without breaking.</image:title>

<image:caption>I do use glazes sometimes, my favorites are muted colors with a matte finish. On the photo you can see the buckets with glazes in our community studio. Lot’s of different colors and possibilities to choose from. Textured glazes can be interesting and I use them from time to time. Depending on the pieces, I leave some unglazed because the clay itself has a beautiful tone and texture. One of my latest experiments was with dark clay. I wanted to make my bestselling Mushroom Vase in black clay. It was my first time using it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the realm of ceramics, the ancient technique of hand-building stands as a testament to the timeless connection between human hands and clay. As a ceramic artist deeply immersed in the craft, I find immense joy in the meditative process of hand-building, which involves creating ceramic objects without the use of a pottery wheel. Instead, I rely on my hands, fingers, and a few simple tools. This method establishes a more direct and tactile connection between the artist and the clay. I'm also drawn to the imperfect and natural aesthetics of ceramic vases and sculptures, achievable through hand-building.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The artistry of hand building - Coiling technique</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the oldest methods of hand-building, coiling involves rolling out long, snake-like strands of clay and layering them to form the desired shape. This technique allows for both organic and structured forms to emerge. The artist's hands guide the coils, shaping and smoothing them into a harmonious whole. The flexibility of coiling encourages the creation of vessels, sculptures, or even abstract forms. I create most of my work using a coiling method. It allows me to make larger pieces, curves, and bulges. To give you a better understanding of the possibilities of coiling, here is an example of my most popular vase that I made with this technique - Sculptural Vase.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The artistry of hand building - Pinching technique</image:title>
<image:caption>In contrast to the rhythmic nature of coiling, pinching is a more spontaneous and immediate approach. Using only fingers and thumbs, the artist gently pinches and compresses the clay, coaxing it into shape. This method invites a sense of intuition and responsiveness, allowing for the emergence of unique and sometimes asymmetrical forms. Pinching is an intimate dance with the material, resulting in pieces that bear the unmistakable imprint of the artist's touch. I use this method to create bud vases and bowls, like this vase over here - Bud Vase.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The artistry of hand building - Slab Building</image:title>
<image:caption>For those seeking a more architectural or angular aesthetic, slab building offers a structured alternative. Thin, flat sheets of clay are rolled out and cut into various shapes, which are then assembled to construct the desired form. This method provides ample room for experimentation with texture, pattern, and surface design. The careful layering of slabs requires precision and planning, turning the creation of each piece into a thoughtful and deliberate process. I rarely use this technique and have yet to explore its full potential, but this large vessel I made using slabs came out beautiful! Here is a link to see it - Multicolor Ceramic Vessel.</image:caption>
