There is a fracture running across the top of this vessel, and I chose to follow it in gold rather than hide it. The form is low and rounded, closer to a river stone than a vase — something the hand wants to rest on. I built it slowly, letting the walls find their own fullness, and finished the surface in a deep matte black that holds shadow and light differently as you move around it. The single opening at the center draws the eye inward; the gold seam pulls it back out. It is a study in weight and balance, made to sit on a low table, a plinth, or a shelf where it can be lived with over time.
A one-of-a-kind sculptural piece, formed entirely by hand in my Los Angeles studio.
Materials: stoneware, matte black finish, gold detail
Dimensions are approximate as the form is organically shaped:
Height: 5 1/2"
Diameter on the top: 9 1/2"
