A rounded, low vessel in warm brown clay, shaped like a river stone worn smooth by time. It was built by hand from scratch, with no mold or wheel. The organic, slightly irregular form follows shapes found in nature, and every curve carries the mark of the maker's hand.
The piece was raku-fired, which is an alternative firing process. The vessel comes out of the kiln while it's still glowing hot and goes straight into flame and smoke. You can't plan or repeat the result. Here it gave a deep earthy brown that turns to charcoal and a metallic sheen wherever the fire touched the surface. Fine lines of gold run across the body and catch the light as you move around the piece.
